Lee D. Kaplan, M.D., is the Director of the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute. The Institute is a collaborative, multidisciplinary effort incorporating many scientific, clinical, and research components. He is a tenured Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds faculty appointments in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Kinesiology and Sports Sciences. Dr. Kaplan is the Chief of UHealth Sports Medicine and serves as Medical Director/ Head Team Physician for the University of Miami Athletic Department and Medical Director for the Miami Marlins Baseball Team. Dr. Kaplan earned an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and a medical degree from George Washington University. While completing his residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Orthopaedic Surgery, he simultaneously completed a sports medicine/shoulder fellowship and a clinical instructor sports medicine and research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the UM Miller School of Medicine Orthopaedics team, Dr. Kaplan served concurrently as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics & Rehabilitation and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine. An expert on conditions resulting from sports-related injury, Dr. Kaplan is the author of multiple articles on sports medicine and articular cartilage, as well as a wide range of other Orthopaedic disciplines. His articles have been published in numerous medical journals in the United States, Canada and abroad. A member of many professional and honorary organizations, such as the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Herodicus Society, the American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. Kaplan is currently a Diplomate of the Board, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons with subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine.
