Doctor Lyle Cain is an orthopedic surgeon and founder of the Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. A native of Birmingham, Dr. Cain graduated from the University of Alabama magna cum laude with bachelor's degree in chemical engineering and earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed a general surgery internship at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, followed by a position as chief resident at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic in Memphis. He then completed an orthopaedic sports medicine fellowship with James R. Andrews, MD and William Clancy, MD at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) where he was invited to become a member of the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center and later founded the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center.  Dr. Cain is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) and the American Baseball Foundation (ABF), where he conducts research, provides community outreach services to youth athletes, and actively educates and trains young orthopaedic surgeons. He is also on the Board of Directors of Oakworth Capital Bank and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM). He holds active memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Association, Alabama State Medical Association, United Way Tocqueville Society, Beaux Arts Krewe, and is a member of Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. Dr. Cain has served as team orthopedic surgeon for the University of Alabama athletes since 2000 and medical director for Jacksonville State University and the University of West Alabama. He is also an orthopaedic consultant for Birmingham-Southern College and the Birmingham Barons. He has been named the SEC Team Physician of the Year by the Southern Orthopaedic Association, Physician of the Year by the Alabama Athletic Trainers Society, and received the Willis C. Campbell Award for Teaching from The Campbell Clinic. Dr. Cain spends his fall Friday nights as a team physician for several high schools including Mountain Brook, Hoover, Homewood, Hewitt-Trussville, Shades Valley and Oak Grove. Dr. Cain also leads a community outreach program through the University of West Alabama, which provides free medical services to more than 40 secondary schools in the rural West Alabama area. Dr. Cain and his wife, Jill (B.S. UA ’90), have four children: Sarah (28, B.S. Chemical Engineering UA ’18, MBA ’19), Virginia (25, BS Comm disorders ’19, Masters Speech Language Pathology ‘20 UA), Edward (23, BS Finance ‘23 UA) and George (20, Jr at UA). He participates in wildlife habitat management and enjoys golf, hunting, fishing and other outdoor recreational activities with his family.
