Claude T. (T) Moorman, III, MD is Professor and Edward N. Hanley, Jr. Endowed Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and President of the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute. After Duke undergrad, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, residency at Duke University and fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY, Moorman served as Head Team Physician for the Baltimore Ravens through their first Super Bowl. He returned to Duke where he served as the Vice Chairman of Orthopaedics, Chief of Sports Medicine, and Head Team Physician through eight National Championships, five Bowl games and 60 ACC championships! He was recruited to Atrium Health where he took up his current duties on January 1, 2018. As President of the Musculoskeletal Institute, Dr. Moorman manages over 100 clinical faculty, 12 PhD faculty, 31 residents and fellows, and the musculoskeletal service line. He has served as Residency and Fellowship Program Director and on the Education Committee at three different institutions and has been responsible for the education of over 200 residents and 75 fellows. He has received the Resident Teaching Award on two separate occasions. He has been the president or a member of the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Magellan Society, the Southern Orthopaedic Association, the Piedmont Orthopaedic Society, the Atlantic Coast Conference Team Physician Society, the Duke Medical Alumni Association, and the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association. Dr. Moorman serves on the Editorial Board for five scientific journals. He has over two hundred publications including 6 textbooks and over 1000 presentations in 30 different countries on 5 continents. Awards include the Charles Neer Award, the AOSSM Aircast Award, the Philip D. Wilson Award, the AAOSM Aircast Award, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association Research Award and the Southern Orthopaedic Association Research Award. Dr. Moorman has been recognized in Castle and Connolly and Best Doctors, NC Business Journal Best Doctors, and Triangle Business Journal Best Doctors for over 20 years, the Southern Orthopaedic Association (SOA) “Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist” in July 2021 and served as President of the Hospital for Special Surgery Alumni Association in October 2023.
